Anna Leader ’18’s #PP55 Experience at Capital Partners for Education in D.C.

January 2019: Capital Partners for Education (CPE) pairs DC high school students with mentors and provides them with college-readiness curriculum and experiences. My caseload of over 50 students keeps me busy with school visits, mentor check-in calls, and more, in addition to ongoing projects like coordinating our free SAT classes and sending scholarship opportunities to our seniors. Running the Student Leadership Council (SLC) has been a highlight of my Fellowship year so far.

Last semester, the thirteen council members, including the two awesome students in this picture, planned a “Holidays in Hollywood” themed party which was attended by ~250 CPE students, alumni, mentors, and family members. We had food, trivia, games, and a raffle; it was awesome to see the SLC step up and take ownership of the event. (Here, you can see superstars Lady and TaShawn practicing to announce the raffle winners!) CPE works with our students from tenth grade all the way through college, so I know that the students I’m supporting now will continue to receive mentorship, case management, and emergency funds for textbooks until they’ve completed their education and are ready to pursue their professional dreams. It’ll be hard to leave them at the end of the year!
